Royal Empress Tree
Scientific Name: Paulownia Kawakamii

Fastest growing hardwood tree in the world. Grows up to 30 feet in just 3 years. Beautiful lavender orchid like flowers with a jasmine scent. Leaves are very large the first year (the size of an elephant ear) giving it a tropical look. Leaves are the size of a dinner plate second year and hand size thereafter. Likes full sun, well-drained soil. Grows to 27'-30', 30' spread.

Throughout the orient it is a tradition to plant this tree when a child is born. When the child marries, the tree is cut down to make a wedding chest. They also believe in planting the tree close to the home so the phoenix will come and bring them good luck.

Alexander or King Palm
Scientific Name: Archontophoenix alexandrae

King palm comes from Queensland, Australia. The crown shaft is olive green, and the 6-10 foot leaves are bright green on top and slightly silver underneath.The fruit is crimson. Full sun. Grows in acidic, well-drained soil. Grows 35-50' high with a 15-18' spread.

King palm is aptly named for its majestic presence in any landscape large enough to accommodate its stately size. It works well as a stand-alone palm but looks even grander in a grouping.

Pink Trumpet
Scientific Name: Tabebuia heterophylla


Pink Trumpet Tree grows at a moderate rate from a slim pyramid when young to a broad silhouette. Green leaves are evergreen throughout most of its range but may be briefly deciduous as the the leaves emerge. The showy display of pink, bell shaped blooms appears throughout the spring and summer. Bottle Palm
Scientific Name: Hyophorbe lagenicaulis

Native to the Mascarene Islands, this palm gets its common name from the shape of its trunk, which resembles a rounded bottle when the plant is young. As the palm ages the bottle shape elongates. The fruit is dark green. Full sun; not particular about soil as long as it drains well. Grows 12'-15' high with 6'-8' spread.

To fully appreciate the unusual shape of this palm, plant it in an open area surrounded only by lawn or a low-growing ground cover. A grouping of bottle palms is also extremely picturesque.

Sweet Bay Magnolia
Scientific Name: Magnolia virginiana

The Sweet Bay Magnolia has pale green leaves with a silver underside that has a frosted appearance. The 2"-3" creamy white flowers have a light lemon scent and are visible in late spring and early summer.
Full sun, partial shade  Grows in acidic, loamy, moist, rich, sandy, silty loam, well drained, wet soils. Grows 25-40' high with 15-25' spread.

This is a very elegantly shaped tree and is a good choice for a specimen or patio tree. Bright scarlet-red seeded fruit ripens in late summer attracting many birds.

Royal Poinciana
Scientific Name: Delonix regia

The many-branched, broad, spreading, flat crowned deciduous tree is well-known for its brilliant display of red-orange blooms, literally covering the tree tops from May to July. There is nothing like a Royal Poinciana in full bloom. Full sun; tolerant of a wide variety of soils and conditions. Grows 35'-40' high with40'-60' spread.

The fine, soft, delicate leaflets afford dappled shade during the remainder of the growing season, making Royal Poinciana a favorite shade tree or freestanding specimens in large, open lawns.

Southern Live Oak
Scientific Name: Quercus virginiana

The Live Oak tree has been called majestic, romantic, and "one of the most impressive trees in North America." They will thrive in almost any location and have superior wind resistance. The character of Live Oaks can change dramatically with location, however. On drier sites it assumes a dwarf form and near the northern climates it drops its leaves in the fall like any ordinary broad-leaf tree. Full sun, partial shade; acidic, alkaline, drought tolerant, loamy, moist, sandy, well drained, wide range, clay soils. Tolerant of salt spray.  Grows 60'-80', with 60'-120' spread. (Zones 7-10)

Royal Palm
Scientific Name: Roystonea regia

From Florida and the Caribbean, royal palm has a smooth grayish white trunk that reaches 2 feet in diameter. It is generally columnar, although sometimes it develops a distinct bulge midway up the trunk. The deep green crown shaft can be 6 feet long. The 12 foot long feathery leaves are bright green. The fruit is purplish black when ripe. Full sun; acidic or alkaline soil, well-drained and some organic matter is helpful. Grows 60'-90' with 15'-20' spread. (zones 9b,10)  CHECK GROWING ZONES MAP

Overpowering in a small landscape but magnificent in a large garden, royal palm is equally adapted to formal or casual tropical landscapes.

Christmas Palm
Scientific Name: Adonidia merrillii

This palm hails from the Philippines but is a common fixture in landscapes throughout the world. The gray trunk is about 5 to 8 inches in diameter. The crown shaft is light green and the 4- to 6-foot-long leaves light to medium green. The fact that the fruit turns crimson at Christmastime is responsible for one of the palm's common names. Purple Jacaranda
Scientific Name: Jacaranda mimosifolia



Soft, delicate, fern like, deciduous foilage and dense terminal clusters of lavender-blue, lightly spreading tree and outstanding specimen planting. The striking blooms can appear any time from April through August (most often May, and are sometimes present before the fresh, new, light green leaves appear in spring. Full sun-light shade; Grows in sandy, well-drained soil. Grows 25'-40' high with 45'-60' spread.

Triangle Palm
Scientific Name: Dypsis decaryl

Triangle Palm is endangered in its native Madagascar, but fortunately it has been widely cultivated so  the species is in no danger of disappearing. Its common name comes from the leaves that radiate out in three distinct planes. The medium gray trunk ranges from 12 to 20 inches thick. The 6- to 10-long leaves, which are V-shaped and arch near their ends, can be deep green, gray-green or blue-greens. The fruit is nearly white. Full sun; does well in acidic or alkaline soil that freely drains. Grows 25'-30' high with 12'-15' spread.

Triangle palm will be a focal point no matter where you place it. The plant looks best a a as a specimen surrounded by lawn or a low ground cover.

Foxtail Palm
Scientific Name: Wodyetia bifurcata

Native to far northern Queensland, Australia, and discovered only in the early 1980s, foxtail palm has already become widely cultivated. The plant may develop a bulge midway up its smooth light gray trunk that otherwise is 8 to 10 inches thick. The crown shaft is lighter green than the dark green 7- to 9-foot-long leaves. The fruit is brilliant red when ripe. Full sun; well-drained acidic soil. Grows 40'-50' high with 10'-12' spread.

Foxtail palm is superb with a ground cover or other large-lead foliage plants such as philodendron and elephant's ear beneath it. This palm also makes an elegant street tree.

Pygmy Date Palm
Scientific Name: Phoenix roebelenii

Pygmy date palm grows along rivers and streams in Laos, Vietnam, and southern China. The 3- to 5-inch-thick trunk is covered in old leaf bases and fibers except in oldest part which displays knobby leaf scars. The 3- to 5-foot-long shiny dark green leaves are made up of leaflets borne along stems armed with long spines. The fruit is jet black. Full sun-light shade; acidic to neutral soil. Pygmy date's compact size makes it versatile. Use it as a small focal point either on its own or surrounded by other foliage plants. It makes a delightful container plant outdoors or indoors.

Scientific Name: Lagerstromia indica


A long period of striking summer flower color, attractive fall foliage and good drought tolerance all combine to make the Crape Myrtle a favorite small tree for either formal or informal landscapes. It is highly recommended for planting in urban and suburban areas. Grows 10'-30' with 10'-15' spread, clay; loam; sand; acidic; alkaline; well-drained soil. (zones 7-10)
